temperance bars

I wonder if anyone remembers a temperance bar in King St in the 1950s?
I am sure I remember being taken to one on the opposite side of the Court cinema, further down from where the Turnkey was. My sister says it was in Chapel Lane, but I am sure it was on King St. Hope someone can settle this!

Kathy,there was one at the top of King Street,it was supposedly the first place to have glass cups and saucers..but as I say it was at the very top..right hand side going up the street.

They were both Lewis's. One facing the post office in Wallgate and the other in King St as you say.

Next question -- When I was about 10 my brothers and sisters and I were taken to a Children's Christmas party in a building in King St ( which I later thought might have been something to do with the Masons) It was incredibly gloomy with pictures on the wall of local dignitaries whose eyes followed us as we went past!
I have a feeling that our local doctor may have arranged for us to go. Can anyone add to this?

Kathy..no,Malleys shop was right at the bottom of Wallgate,just before you hit the top of Miry Lane.I don't remember any temperance bars anywhere near there.

when I read your message about the temperance bar opposite the Post Office, I mistook it for one I thought I remembered near Malley's shoe shop which I know was in Wallgate near Miry Lane. I thought I remembered a temperance bar there, also a newsagents and possibly a dry cleaners-- but memory does play tricks! I grew up around Wallgate but unfortunately, like so much of Wigan, it's changed beyond all recognition.

Kathy,did you know Irene McGovern from the top of Queen St..I think it was either No 70 or 80.

My wife's remember's one at top of Atherton RD and Leigh RD ,Hindley Green she says it was there from the 1950s onward now it's a florist shop ...GB

There was also one facing the Ritz Cinema and another one in King Street. We liked Lewis' place the best. I spent some great times there.

In the 50s the temperance bar next to Malleys was run by Mr and Mrs Young. I think Mrs Young's first name was Clara.

Correction - Mrs Young's first name was Clarice, not Clara

I grew up in Wallgate and can't for the life of me remember one near Malleys shoe shop..but the one facing the Ritz cinema I used every day ..I worked at Wilbrooks facing the Ritz cinema so nipped next door to the temperance bar for my morning tea and toast..those were really happy days.

My Auntie Mary lived in Great George's St. and my grandmother's sister married a Thomas McGovern. I've been doing my family tree and would be very interested in contacting you

Hello Kathy, Irene and myself weren’t related at all but spent all our school days together and after leaving school we were still together.. she wasn’t very well as she grew older so I still went to see her every week ( my bike took me anywhere.) I was with her when she passed away .. she was the greatest friend I could have wished for.. now my Grandads name was Thomas McGovern if that’s any help oh.. my Grandmas name before marriage was Kinnane and of course she was Irish.. it would be be lovely if we were related.. oh by the way my Grandparents lived at the top of Great George St no 5.. we lived further down at no 23.. hope to hear from you Cathy.

Hi Momac, I lives at 45 Queen St and I know from family history that my grandmother's sister, Bridget Malone married a Thomas McGovern. The Malones lived in Lyon St. We are big family-- my maiden name is O'Loughlin.My Auntie Mary lived next door to McGoverns--does this help?

Forgot to say my Auntie Mary lived at 25 George's St

I do seem to remember mention of McGoverns at the top of Queen St--my grandma (Mum's Mum) lived st 25 Queen St . They were McCabes.
